about

Originally released cassette tape scratchiness from 1989. Hand fashioned in batches of 16 or 32 ( depending on how many 8 packs of those pocket sized cereal boxes we could afford ). skillfully razored open, cereal bag pin pricked, deflated and then re-sealed with a sticker ( so much air was in these things a cassette and more could easily be inserted after deflation, great value Mr Ke**og!), mostly sold by mail order and at a few shops or gigs.. maybe upwards of 128 might exist somewhere in the world... the birth of the Stock, Hausen & Walkman myth and true proof that their roots were as much in improvising as in tape scratching and sampling. All recordings live from a private afternoon session upstairs at The Star & Garter in Manchester and bits from a few other gigs at The Millstone. This cassette is so rare even members of the band didn't have a copy so these recordings rescued from a fans copy kindly loaned by post.. some attempt has been made to restore sound quality but frankly this sort of thing sounds so much better through the rose coloured haze of cassette noise and Overdriven oxide amplification..

" I could leave it there...... but I won't... "

Stock, Hausen & Walkman was started by Matt Wand and Rex Caswell as an antidote to what they considered to be "the Po-Faced Improvised Music" prevalent at the time. By the time this cassette came about An Old Hat and Dan Weaver had also joined the fray.. Marvel at its naivety! boggle at the intrusive hums 'n' hisses and hope and pray this sort of thing never catches on ;-]
